Hi, I was wondering if you would be willing to share your Nepeta Hat pattern? I saw your post of a plush wolf wearing it a while ago and it's probably the best Nepeta Hat I've seen :3

I… don’t think I have that pattern any more! Sorry! But I’ll try to explain what I did.

I used a basic fleece hat pattern, which is 4 rounded triangley shapes and a long rectangular band. Like this pattern/tutorial over here! I modified the band part to have ear flaps (hey, there’s also a link to a tutorial explaining that in the one I just linked to! How convenient!)

For the :3 mouth shape, at the front end of the band pattern piece I made it gradually curve to end in a point. This bit ends up at the front of the hat obviously!

When making horn-holes you… uh, just try your best to judge where they should go! Really, that’s all I can suggest. Maybe do a test hat first if you can be bothered? If you already have horns on a headband it might be easier to find where they should poke through the hat (I didn’t when I made mine. It was difficult.) For reference, the back edge of my horns ended up about an inch forward of the hat’s side seams, but it might be different for yours…

The nose is a little triangular bit of fleece sewn on, and the eyes are buttons. Also the inside of the brim on mine is lime green because I ran out of blue at the time, but I like how it looks anyway! At least it’s a Nepeta-relevant colour.

Extra thing: my hat has detachable horns made of fleece, sewn onto circles of fleece with velcro patches around the edges. There’s velcro sewn to the inside of the hat too, around the holes, so the horns just stick in place and poke through the holes. Then I can wear the hat as a normal hat when I’m not cosplaying! That’s totally optional, obviously.

Well, I hope that helped almost as much as a pattern! I’m glad you happened to like my hat a little more than all the zillions of other Nepeta hats out there, hehe :3

How much fleece do we need for one squiddle?

I’m not entirely sure! Depends how big you want to make it (also I’ve forgotten). I’d suggest cutting out all the pieces you need from paper first and laying them out to get an estimate of the area.

Your blog is 100% Grade A+

Oh gosh, thanks! Maybe I should… post more.

Hi, I have a question about the squiddles, and even though I looked through the link of your asks, I didn't see anything about using the patters, which is my question. May I, with your permission, use the squiddle patterns in a giveaway I'm planning on doing for my 4,130'th post on tumblr? I will include that the pattern was used with permission, and I'll include a link to your squiddle page so that people could make their own. Please reply soon. -Mina

Yes, that is perfectly okay! Giveaways are cool with me. Have fun with it! :D

Hi! I absolutely love your Squiddle plushies, and would like to ask what your policy is on selling things made with your pattern.

My policy would be: nope. Which is also pretty much Andrew Hussie’s policy on selling Homestuck-related things, funnily enough! So yeah you’d better not do that.

Still, you are free to make lots and give them away! Or swap them for things, I guess. Just not money.

Eastern Emerald Elysia

Elysia chlorotica is a “solar-powered” marine sea slug that sequesters and retains photosynthetically active chloroplasts from the algae it eats and, remarkably, has incorporated algal genes into its own genetic code. It is emerald green in color often with small red or white markings, has a slender shape typical of members of its genus, and parapodia (lateral “wings”) that fold over its body in life. This sea slug is unique among animals to possess photosynthesis-specific genes and is an extraordinary example of symbiosis between an alga and mollusc as well as a genetic chimera of these two organisms.

where can i get the eyes for the squiddles?

They should be easy enough to find online, or in a good sewing shop. Search for plastic safety eyes online.

(Since I think I’ve had a question like this before, I’ve just decided to tag all my squiddle and sewing-related answers and linked to them in my sidebar. Hopefully that can help someone!)
